There is a romantic vision of a man, solitary in thought and deed, wandering the Earth, focused
solely on himself, taking care of his own business and never needing the help or company of
others. The Lone Wolf. Masculine, free, independent and strong, accountable to no one.
There is no such thing in the human culture except in our minds and imaginations. The thought
makes for a great story and has, in fact, been the basis of many great novels and movies. It is
simply not true or possible in the modern world.
Everyone is simply accountable to someone or something. Give me an example and I’ll show
you a chain of accountability. President? Accountable to the taxpayers. A King? Accountable to
his legacy, if nothing else. God? Accountable to his universe, according to laws of physics and
evidence of things like the Golden Ratio and natural selection.
The idea of being independent and free from any man is a vision sought by people who have
allowed themselves to feel chained to a person, job or task. The thought of walking away, being
that lone wolf, accountable and responsible to none, is a fantasy for those that either shirk, fear
or despise the idea of accountability providing validation of worth life and work.
I say that it is an honor to be accountable, to be responsible, to be able to stand and deliver on
my word, actions and morals. I find it refreshing and exhilarating to know that I must account
for my actions, that there are people that count on me, that look to me and that for me, there
are other people like me that feel the same way.
I leave you with this. Look forward to be accountable, be glad of the network or tribe around
you that will hold you accountable, all while providing that basis of help, learning and
fellowship. No one walks alone, we all answer to someone or something, if nothing else, look
inside and answer to yourself.
